KUCHING: As part of the preparations for Sukma XVII in Perlis next year, the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) will be sending a team to compete in the 24th Malaysian Wushu Championship at OCM Hall in Kuala Lumpur from September 22-24.
According to WFS pro tem secretary William Kong Sing Yii, this was one of the decisions reached at the association’s first executive committee meeting held in Bintulu recently.
The state team, with seven female exponents, will consist of Sukma XVII team members and some members from the Sukma Shadow Team.
Among them are Andy Chan, Liew Lik Kee, Elvic Bong, Clement Thian, Amelia Su, Audrey Chan and Kelly Shu.  Other members of the team will only be known after a selection this Sunday.
Apart from taolu (routines) events, WFS will also be fielding some exponents in the tuishou (pushing hands) competition.
“The national championship will serve as a good exposure competition for the state exponents in preparing for their challenge in Perlis next year,” said Kong.
He said as there is no age limit for competitors at this national meet, it is very likely that most of the national and former national exponents as well as state and former state exponents will be vying for glory.
“It will also be a platform for them to strut their stuff and for WFS to gauge their strengths and weaknesses as well as getting to assess the capabilities of the exponents from other strong states like Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Penang,” added Kong.
Meanwhile, WFS has also set up a website sarawakwushu.blogspot.com where members, supporters and enthusiasts can view updated activities of WFS and reports on competitions organised by both the state wushu governing body and the Wushu Federation of Malaysia.
Pictures and reports on previous Sukma and other national and international wushu championships are also being constantly uploaded to the website.
