KUCHING: State junior wushu exponents, Felicia Ma Hui Qi and Yong Arifah Khairul Kok had been selected to represent Malaysia at the Asian Wushu Junior Championship to be held in Manila, Philippines next month.
The two Wushu Federation of Sarawak’s (WFS) junior national exponents received the call-ups early this month and they will join 10 others for the intensive training to be held at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from July 15 to August 5.
Last year, Elvic Bong Qian Zheng, Clement Thian Fung Seng, Nicholas Kho How Chun and Fu Wen Jie represented Malaysia at the World Junior Wushu Championship held in Macau.
In 2011, Elvic Bong and Audrey Chan Jee Jo competed in the Asian Junior Wushu Championship in Shanghai, China.
Elvic was the only Sarawak exponent to have competed in the World Junior Wushu Championship held in Singapore in 2010.
Ma and Arifah were selected based on their performances at last year’s Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia (KPM) Wushu Championships held in Ipoh, Perak.
Ma, a 12-year-old primary six student from Chung Hua Primary School No. 4, won two silver medals in the changquan and qiangshu and a bronze in the jianshu at the national junior meet.
For 14-year-old Arifah of SMK Sungai Maong, she won the gold in taijijian and for the best non-Chinese performer and a fourth placing in taijiquan.
In the Asian championship, Ma had been entered for the Girls’ Group C changquan and jianshu while Arifah will compete in Girls’ Group B taijiquan and taijijian.
Meanwhile, WFS coach and Sarawak State Sports Council’s (MSNS) Centre of Excellence for Wushu, Kuching coach, Ling Ung Hee said the call-ups for the two champion exponents was another achievement for WFS and Sarawak wushu in general.
“This is a result of the hard work and consistent training put in by the duo and I hope they can give a good account of themselves and do the state and nation proud by winning some medals in the Asian meet,” she said.
Yong Arifah will depart to Kuala Lumpur today while Ma will leave Kuching tomorrow to join the national training camp.
